What Is the Equipment Needed For Growing Microgreens?

Posted on May 6, 2021

What is it with growing microgreens? How do you get started and where do you find the equipment needed for microgreens? Microgreens, also known as dwarf greens, are very easy to grow indoors. They are extremely pretty growing plants that can be eaten on site or stored in a refrigerator for a few weeks. It is just a matter of knowing what it is you need to do to grow your micro greens indoors.

First you need to determine what plants you want to grow. They can range from dwarf irises, blue star crickets, house centipedes, cardinal flowers, daisy or whatever you like. All of these require similar growing requirements so all you need to do is research the different species available and then purchase the appropriate equipment for each species.

Second you need to get your supplies. To begin this task you can either visit your local nursery or purchase your equipment at a garden store. If you choose the latter option then you have more choices but make sure that you know what you are doing when it comes to planting microgreens. A lot of people do not know enough about this subject and do not know how to go about properly planting the tiny plants. You also have to remember that most of these plants are extremely fragile so special considerations have to be made.

Third you have to dig. You have to dig a hole that is as wide as the micro green plants you would like to grow. If you are unsure about this step you can seek professional advice at a garden center. However, if you decide to follow some simple steps then you should be able to successfully grow microgreens.

Next you have to prepare the soil. Since microgreens tend to grow on rocks and pebbles you will need to put some rocks in the bottom of the hole. You will also need to add some compost so that the plant can provide its own food. The compost will also condition the soil making it ideal for growing plants of this type. Once this is done you can plant your tiny crops.

Fourth you need to train the plants. Microgreens are not that hard to train once you get used to them. You will need to place the seedlings in a plastic bag and after they sprout you simply have to cover them. Covering the plants means limiting the amount of light they get and that is the reason why you need the proper equipment needed for microgreens. This equipment includes a grow lamp.

The last thing you will need to do is to train your plants. You do this by providing indirect lighting system. Microgreens are known to be disease-resistant plants but if you are growing more than three plants or if the light source is not intense enough you will have problems with them. The indirect lighting system will provide sufficient light, not allowing the light source to affect the plants’ health. This is one way of training your plants to adapt to the lighting system.

When you are growing microgreens make sure that you follow the instructions carefully. This is because this type of plant does not grow well in an unstable environment. If you fail to follow instructions the results can be disastrous. Equipment needed for microgreens can be bought in bulk from most garden centers. However, you will also find some of the equipment sold in the internet at affordable prices. Just make sure to choose those that are made from good materials.
