What Are the Best Lighting and Fertilizer For Indoor Microgreens?

Posted on May 13, 2021

Microgreens are a new variety of vegetables which have become very popular in the last few years. The name comes from the idea that they are tiny and have a very distinctive appearance. They can be seen in the vegetable section of any large supermarket.

Microgreens can be grown from seed or purchased at your local nursery. The seed is smaller than the vegetables, so you need to use smaller pots. They also require less care as they do not need as much water, they are shallow roots that make them easy to handle. They are very easy to grow and the plants can take a lot of care.

These vegetables need little attention so they can be left to grow on their own. You should make sure they receive adequate light. Some people who have grown microgreens and are fans of them say that they are like miniature versions of vegetables. They have a lovely bright green color and have a distinct small root structure. This means that they are very easy to grow and they require little attention, but when they do become too big, they will need more light, water and fertilizer.

Light is one of the key factors which make microgreens grow well. Even though they are small, they do need lots of light, but how much light is needed will depend on the space in which you are growing them. If you have limited space, you should choose microgreens that is not too tall to take up plenty of room and then opt for a larger light.

Light is vital for the microgreens as it helps them to grow well. If you do not get enough light, they can go into dormancy and this can result in problems.

So, what are the best ways to grow microgreens? Well, if you have a balcony, there are lots of window places which give plenty of light to the plants, but if you have limited space, you should opt for pots which are deeper. Then, you should ensure that you have good ventilation.

Time is another important factor when it comes to growing microgreens. They should be planted when they are at least four weeks old. The earlier you plant them, the more chance you have of success.

You should make sure you are prepared for different seasons. You may want to grow them throughout the year, but if you have a cold snap, you may not want to plant them at all.

When you begin to grow microgreens, you should water them every other day or you may find the roots become covered with a black layer, which means they do not survive. Then, you should remove the black color and re-water. This method works very well in hot weather.

You should ensure that you allow the soil to dry out for a couple of days before you plan to transplant the microgreens. This will help them to start to spread out.

Planting is much easier if you have a hoe to help you spread the roots out. Take the plants outside and prune them as and when necessary. Never pinch off the roots, as this will affect their ability to spread.

Take care not to over-water the plants as this can harm the roots. It is recommended that you water the plants twice a week, but if this is not possible, then you should water them every other day.
