Is It Safe for Babies to Eat Microgreens?

Posted on May 2, 2021

Recently, I read in a parenting magazine that some baby food manufacturers had added microgreens to their recommended diet for infants and toddlers. The author said that these little leaves are rich in antioxidants and iron and are a good choice for increasing the amount of nutrients your baby gets from the food they eat. The whole article was informative and encouraging, but I wondered if my babies were eating any other foods besides apples and carrots.

I took my daughter to the pediatrician’s office and she told me about her visit. She said, “You should know that apples and carrots are for grown ups. Babies should not be fed food with these nutrients in it because they cannot digest them properly. It may cause intestinal upset and damage the lining of the intestines.”

Now, I am not totally down on carrots and apples but I realized that maybe I should give our babies something different to snack on. Our family has switched to eating microgreens instead of regular vegetables. Why? Because I read somewhere that studies have shown that babies who were given lettuce or microgreens were more likely to take notice of other foods and be choosy about what they liked. I am not completely convinced that lettuce and microgreens are the right combination but I am trying it out and I think it might help our babies. They like the taste and it is a more natural form of food.

The other thing we did was we started using only a few types of greens for our babies to snack on. Now, they get to eat all different types of vegetables and fruit. Sometimes we do serve fruit and vegetables together but only because our little ones like them that way. The result is that they have more variety in their food and it tastes better.

If you are wondering can babies eat microgreens? Well, as long as it is made with whole grains, vegetables and fruits then I think they will like it. If you want to avoid giving your baby table food, make sure you know what the ingredients are and don’t buy any baby food that has artificial colorings or even preservatives. These things will not be good for your baby’s health in any way.

If you really want to give your babies table scraps you should take them to a daycare center where they can have fun playing and socializing with other babies. It will also encourage you to start feeding your baby with a wider range of healthy foods. You just need to take it one step at a time and know how to cook and buy the right baby food. In my opinion the best thing to do when asking can babies eat microgreens is to check with your medical professionals?
