Is It a Requirement to Refrigerate Microgreens?

Posted on May 4, 2021

Microgreens, also known as spirulina and blue-green algae, are a delicious and flavorful alternative to regular lettuce. Unlike lettuce, which is very difficult to grow due to the narrow growing space, micro greens can be planted virtually anywhere. You can place them on top of your salads, side dishes, or any other place that you want to have a great green salad. They are also great to include in soups, stews, or casseroles. They will add an interesting flavor to any dish while being healthy. But how do you refrigerate microgreens?

Like all other vegetables, microgreens will spoil if they are not kept properly. The best way to keep them fresh is to keep them in a cool, dark place where they will not be exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. The only exception to this rule is if you are growing microgreens in a greenhouse; then you can keep them in a window covered with glass.

To preserve microgreen, store it in a cold refrigerator. Make sure that the temperature is below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If your refrigerator has a seal, use it to keep the microgreen cold. Once it has been placed in the refrigerator, carefully remove it from the packaging. Wash it to remove all dust and any dirt that might be stuck to the leaves.

To serve, remove the tiny leaves from the microgreen and slice it into quarter-inch pieces. If you would like to make a salad, this is a good place to start because lettuce is also small enough to fit into a micro green leaf. Using a lettuce leaf will also ensure that you get all of the leaves. For this recipe, I like to add a little salt since microgreens tend to be salty. You will find that salad dressing works very well with this type of green, such as lime juice or yogurt.

If you prefer to use lettuce to serve, then you should keep some in the refrigerator to add when you are ready to serve. To keep microgreens fresh, be sure to keep them covered with a plastic bag until you are ready to prepare them. Then, simply cut off any excess leaves and slice them into quarters. Add these into your salads and dressings and you will have tasty, nutritious lettuce that will keep you satisfied for many meals.

With this quick guide, you can see that microgreens can be a nice addition to many recipes. From salads to tuna wraps, lettuce is a versatile and tasty ingredient that will add color and flavor to any meal. For this reason, many people are asking the question “Do you refrigerate microgreens?”. The answer to this question is that it depends. Lettuce is certainly a fine substitute for microgreen when it comes to keeping the leaves and roots from losing their crispness, however, they are not necessary in every dish.
