How to Put Microgreens Under Light For Best Results

Posted on June 15, 2021

Most people who grow their own microgreens prefer to use a container that can provide them with shade and a place to grow their favorite plants. Microgreens are very popular because they are small, full of wonderful flavor and full of essential nutrients that make your plants healthier and taste better. The problem many amateur gardeners have is deciding when to plant them. Microgreens thrive best in shaded areas and can be planted in pots that can be placed under indirect light or in direct light if the plant has been established.

One of the things to keep in mind when deciding when to put microgreens under light is sunlight availability. They need a lot of sunlight to grow well. If you live in a location where it gets fairly little sunlight, consider either planting the seeds just before you plan to go on vacation or have some of the plants in the pots left outdoors when the sun is not shinning as much. The leaves will darken and the roots will get more nutrients.

Microgreens do better in lighting that is natural. You should use the brightest bulb you can find for your plants. If you have a fluorescent bulb, try to avoid using it near flowering plants because the fluorescent bulbs emit blue light and will kill your plants. Choose an incandescent bulb that is made for general plant growing.

Do not expose your growing microgreens to extreme temperatures. They will not survive being exposed to direct sunlight without the proper protection. To ensure they get enough warmth, put the pots in the sunlight when the plant starts to bloom. If your climate is temperate, consider mulching the top of the pot to help retain moisture. Direct sunlight can also damage some types of flowers such as roses.

Be sure to remove all of the old garden soil before you repot your plants. Old garden soil loses water content over time and can dehydrate the roots. It will also attract insects like caterpillars and spiders which will feed off the roots. If you repot your plants before they die, you will be able to use the existing soil and not have to replant it.

When to put microgreens under light to start with? Anytime your plant starts to develop leaves, it is an excellent time to place them under a full spectrum of light for the best results. This will promote new growth and the plants will be healthier.

What is the proper time to use a greenhouse when you are growing microgreens? Anytime that the weather is not cold and there is not snow on the ground. This rule also applies if you have a plant that will be placed outside. The plant may require more watering than usual or it may need to sit out during the summer months. Either way, you can place your plants inside a greenhouse if you have the room.

How can you determine when to use a greenhouse for growing vegetables? Well, most experts would recommend that you place your first batch of seedlings in a greenhouse during the winter months so that they are fully developed and when the first frost strikes they are ready to be transplanted outdoors. But, it all really depends on the type of crop you are growing. Consult your local gardening books for specific advice or talk to a gardening specialist.

Can you leave microgreens alone throughout the year? Yes, you can but be sure you do not over water your plants when they are growing. This can cause them to wilt and possibly die. If you are growing annuals in a container and have some perennials as well, you should water your plants about every six weeks during the growing season and once a month when the perennials are coming out of the ground.

How many microgreens do you need to purchase? Typically, experts would suggest that you get about three plants each so that you can get three full growing plants when the garden blooms. The number of plants that you need depends on the amount of light they need and whether you plan to use them indoors or outdoors. If you want them indoors and are using an artificial source of light, you only need to buy enough lights for your desired number of plants.

When to put microgreens under light is something you should consider carefully because this will be affecting the growth phase of your plants. It is best to place them when the bud has just begun to form. It is also important that you give them about six hours of light when they are in the flowering phase. Once they bloom, you should put them back inside because they will not flower again for another two weeks.
