How to Plant Your Microgreens

Posted on May 13, 2021

Microgreens are very small growing plants with large leaves. These small plants grow much quicker than other garden plants and often require much less water or fertilizer than regular garden plants.

You need to find a suitable container for these small plants that will be big enough to contain them. If you try to grow microgreens in small pots, they can quickly grow large enough to cause problems. An ideal container is one that is four times bigger than the actual plant.

When you buy these plants from a gardening shop or online, you need to make sure that you only purchase seeds that are available to germinate quickly and that you know exactly how many seeds to buy. If the seeds are not going to germinate, you will need to replant the whole lot of plants, which is not recommended as the soil can get quite compacted.

If you plant a lot of these plants in a pot, they will not look so good and your plants will be crowded. In order to prevent this you should pick several pots and lay them out on the floor.

The microgreens in each pot will sprout at the same time and when they do you should try to separate them. This is particularly important if you are growing more than one variety of microgreens.

Once you have these plants in the right pots then it is time to water the plants and turn the lights on. The lights should be kept off until the first leaf starts to form.

The first leaf should appear after the night temperatures start to rise in your home and the first leaf is the first part of the first leaf that appears when it is just below the surface of the soil. Once this leaf is ready, you should check the second leaf which will emerge about a week later.

After the first leaf is finished and you have followed the guide in this article correctly, you should switch the lights off. When it comes to replanting this plant, you should leave it as it is as it will start to self root.

You should only use a minimal amount of potting mix before planting the microgreens into the ground. It is important that you do not let the plant get too much water as this will cause the roots to rot and die.

Once you have planted the microgreens in the ground then you should cover them with another pot. To avoid your plants growing to big, overgrown sizes, you should still rotate them every few weeks.

To get the best results from the microgreens, you should allow them to be mulched after they have been mulched once a month, but not during the winter months. As the plants have not developed their root system this should reduce any problems with your plants growing large.

If you buy your microgreens from a store, you should try to use a large pot. When buying your microgreens you should be careful to purchase the exact same variety and same size of plants as you bought the seeds from, else you risk your plants looking different.
