Can You Eat Watermelon Microgreens?

Posted on May 2, 2021

One of the most common questions about growing watermelon plants is, “Can you eat watermelon minigreens?” The short answer to this question is, “I guess so.” When it comes to eating microgreens, the general rule is that it’s okay as long as you don’t over do it. Miniature watermelons are delicious and quite healthy on their own, but they also make an excellent snack when added to a tasty salad. So, can you eat microgreens?

The best way to answer the question can you eat microgreens is to consider how a typical indoor garden will handle them. Indoor gardens typically have well drained soil and good drainage. With indoor growing microgreens, it’s important that you make sure your pots drain well or you’ll end up with watermelons sitting in your tub or on the counter top for weeks. If you can’t find any drainage holes in your pots, or if you find small holes in the leaves of your microgreens, it’s generally not recommended that you plant them in your garden at all.

If you’re not able to use a typical pot, you may have to improvise. You could line two bowls with perforated paper, one with regular sand and the other with sand with a couple inches of water in the bottom. Place half a cup of each in each of the bowls. Once your seeds are ready, remove them from their bags and place them in the bowls. Keep them in the water for a couple days, but once you’re certain they’re growing well, remove them and plant them in your garden.

It’s important to remember that if you’re growing microgreens in a garden, you mustn’t plant them close together. Microgreens are very sensitive plants; they can’t tolerate being crowded. If you try to plant them too closely, they could end up blooming prematurely. If you’re going to plant them in a small space, consider using a stake or hanging baskets for support. They’re not difficult to support, and it won’t take long before you’re able to enjoy the blooms of your watermelon plant.

As far as eating goes, can you eat watermelon minigreens? They taste terrific, and there are few fruits that actually taste better. They’re slightly tart, but not enough to be unappealing. If you don’t like tart foods, you might want to avoid them altogether, instead choosing fruits that are more mild. Other good options include apples, melons, peaches, and grapes.

When can you eat watermelon minigreens? You can eat them any time, as long as you’re growing them yourself. They don’t need to be grown in a special container. All you need to do is put the plant in a sunny spot, make sure it receives regular watering, and give it about four hours of sunshine per day. Over the course of a couple weeks, you should see some wonderful blooms coming forth!
